Sculpted Commercial Presence in Melbourne’s Inner East

Positioned along Cotham Road in Kew, this multi-level commercial development establishes a confident and finely articulated presence within Melbourne’s established inner-eastern corridor. The project reinterprets the discipline of structural expression and material refinement in a dense metropolitan context.

Defined by a series of sculpted horizontal bands, the building steps and tapers along its length, creating deep overhangs and continuous shadow lines that animate the façade. Each floor plate is expressed as an independent stratum, wrapped in mirror-finished stainless steel that reflects street trees, tram lines and passing light. The building dissolves into its surroundings by day and transforms into a luminous urban marker by night through integrated linear lighting tracing the building’s edges.

Rather than adopting the neutrality typical of speculative office developments, 17 Cotham Road establishes a distinctive identity through controlled geometry, material precision and calibrated proportion.

Material Clarity and Urban Reflection

The polished stainless-steel façade introduces a dynamic quality to the streetscape. Its reflective surface captures movement and seasonal change, amplifying the presence of landscape and sky while softening the building’s mass.

The articulated edges are not ornamental gestures but disciplined architectural devices — moderating solar exposure, enhancing depth and reinforcing structural rhythm. The result is a façade that performs environmentally while maintaining a refined metropolitan character.

Urban Integration

The development mediates between adjacent commercial and residential fabric, responding to neighbouring scale while maintaining a strong street address. A recessed ground plane and transparent entry enhance pedestrian engagement, contributing to the public realm without overwhelming it.

Upper levels provide generous outlook and light, while the building’s sculpted profile maintains privacy and urban coherence along the corridor.

A Contemporary Commercial Statement

17 Cotham Road represents a significant addition to the practice’s Melbourne portfolio, demonstrating capability in commercial office architecture at an urban scale. It reflects a consistent design methodology — structurally disciplined, materially rigorous and environmentally responsive — adapted to the temperate context of Victoria.

Where tropical projects dissolve into landscape, here the architecture refracts the city itself.

The project reinforces the practice’s presence in metropolitan Melbourne, positioning it as a confident contributor to contemporary commercial architecture across Victoria.
