Wason Harbour House
Wason Harbour House is a contemporary coastal residence positioned on an elevated site overlooking Wason Harbour along Australia’s eastern seaboard. The project explores a robust architectural language of sculptural concrete structure, layered terraces and carefully framed ocean views, creating a residence that responds directly to the conditions of its coastal landscape.
The design is organised as a series of stepped volumes that descend toward the harbour, allowing the architecture to engage the site topography while maximising outlook and natural ventilation. Each level opens outward to deep ocean-facing terraces that extend the living spaces into the surrounding environment, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior and creating a continuous relationship with the water and horizon beyond.
Materially, the house adopts a restrained palette of exposed concrete, glazing and refined structural detailing, chosen for durability within the demanding coastal climate. The architecture balances this robust materiality with carefully proportioned spaces that emphasise light, movement and framed views of the harbour. Generous openings and shaded outdoor rooms provide protection from sun and prevailing winds while maintaining strong visual connection to the landscape.
Internally, the planning sequence unfolds through a progression of interconnected living spaces that orient toward the harbour. Circulation paths and structural rhythms establish a clear spatial hierarchy, allowing the architecture to transition from more intimate private zones to expansive communal areas designed for gathering and entertaining. The organisation of the house prioritises natural airflow, daylight and long views across the water, creating a living environment that is both open and sheltered.
Environmental responsiveness is central to the project’s design approach. Deep overhangs, recessed glazing and layered terraces moderate solar exposure while enabling natural ventilation across the building. These passive strategies reduce reliance on mechanical systems while supporting comfortable year-round living in the coastal environment. The architecture is therefore both expressive and performative, combining sculptural form with environmental intelligence.
Wason Harbour House continues Charles Wright Architects’ exploration of contemporary residential architecture designed for demanding landscapes. The project reflects the practice’s broader interest in resilient construction, sculptural structural expression and climate-responsive design, while delivering a refined coastal residence that is deeply connected to its site and surroundings.
Positioned within the dramatic setting of Wason Harbour, the house establishes a strong architectural presence while remaining grounded in the natural rhythms of the coastal environment. The result is a residence that balances solidity and openness, providing a calm and enduring framework for life on the edge of land and sea.
